My Review

Story in a Nutshell

It is a beautifully told love story between a Flower spirit and a Phoenix. There is a wonderful love triangle, and the competitive suiters of the beautiful damsel enliven the viewers’ spirits as the choices result in death, decay, and destruction.

Eventually, when all settles down to relative peace, you feel a pause and wish for more of the story! The drama’s plot moves with great assurance and creativity. The fact that each challenge that the main leads face, be it their personal goal or their assigned tasks, there was such depth of understanding.

The Six Realms were greatly played into the plot and the fact that from High Heaven to Deep Demon land the characters traversed to bring the story out in beautiful side-plots. There is a sense of balance in the narrative and the characters played by the actors were done to perfection.

Actual Review

My Likes and Dislikes

I liked a lot of things in the drama. I enjoyed watching my favorite actor Yang Zi perform with such childlike free spirit and then move on to be more serious and mature. The variation that she was able to show in her acting was supreme. The chemistry between each character in the series seemed to have worked out. There were moments when I felt that things might go out of hands with the fantasy genre markings, but then, it was beautifully handled and taken care of.

I liked the theme track song and the general arrangement of the background score was great. The Costume department’s work was beautiful to watch. The slow progress from light colors to complete black with blood red was done to perfection for me. Somehow the narrative got an add push when the frame colors slowly and progressively moved to darker color palettes.

The fight scenes were good and gave a sense of finesse of balance between magic and actual hands-on fight. The other thing that I liked about this drama was the fact that there was a nice mix of innocence and gradual infiltration of evil and the repercussion there from.

I wanted to see more of what happened to the Xu Feng and Jin Mi after they choose the path of being mortals on Earth. Does Run Yu eventually accept his subordinate Kuang Lu? Is there a happier ending for all? But that is the fairytale version of romantic stories. The bad guys are punished, and the good guys take it all.

Some scenes were done well and showed great acting skills of the actors. As a whole package, I loved the drama a lot.

My Opinion

The modern-day dramas are interesting, but then, thinking up stories that are purely fantasy-based ones are occasionally great too! This drama brings out so many emotions and evoked moments of fear for the cast that I was rooting for. Like the instance when there was imminent danger for the female lead, I would be literally chewing my nails and hoping she is safe. I do not know, if one should see the whole drama with such emotional intensity?!! But then, that why it is fiction with clear markings and well-written. You know that everything is fake, but then, even so, it feels so real. That reality feeling is brought out by the dramatic skills of the actors and picturizing skills.
