Volunteering

I love being a knight-in-shinning-armor for various heartfelt causes. But I usually turn out to be the ‘Fat Friar’ of the said cause. Unfettered, I would continue my journey of helping where possible.

So, among the various causes, advocacy for books and for imparting literacy has been an aspiration for a long time. I still remember my maid’s kids come home to learn basic English Language skills. I was already volunteering in small way in Chennai before my US visit.

After returning from the US, I was more involved in various advocacy events. I am a shy person and tend to hide from crowds. This then meant that I would be a nervous wreck after every public event. I was happy to be in the situation, even though, it made me feel uncomfortable.

So, my volunteering included these:

  • Pratham Championship Program that happens on 8th September every year on the World Literacy Day
  • Proofing for Success and Ability Magazine
  • Data-Entry for Shri Annai Ashram (Pudhucheri Mother’s Branch)
  • Helping with English for Children from low-income group

The Changing World

The World of Volunteering is undergoing a lot of change post Covid-19. Almost changing life to before and after the event.

Pre-Covid-19 Volunteering

You could go to the site and carry out decided drives for the event. The human interaction with the children is welcoming warm feeling. I might be nervous among the Adults but with Children I settle-down quietly and happily. Human interaction was the main stay of the volunteering back then.

Post-Covid-19 Volunteering

Now the act of volunteering has become virtual and pretty much disconnected. I am not speaking of the internet connectivity here! Bring a book to a child is still my heart-felt desire. But now it is more of, can we get an oral story to a child!?!

My Current Passion

My current interest is Socio-Psychological Well-Being of People. Psychology words like Depression, Anxiety Disorder, Schizophrenia, Bipolar, and many others have become more acceptable words used in the lingua scheme of the society. The Covid-19 is not only changing the way people interact and react; but also, how they view new order of the world.

World Health Organization (WHO) and American Psychiatric Association (APA) and National Institute for Mental Health and Neuroscience have classified the various Mental Disorders. All the institution recognizes over 450 different definitions of mental disorders. They may be under various broad classification for easier schema for treatment:

  • Newborn babies with brain malfunction at birth
  • Developmental Age Mental Disorders
  • Depression
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Schizophrenia and Psychoses
  • Phobias and Behavioral Disorders
  • Dementia

A rough and ready division with broad strokes. For a more comprehensive list of the Mental Disorders can be found here.

Even though I am passionate about this topic for personal reasons, I do the baadmay every time I had to decide about publishing the few articles that I have created more as a CNF. Maybe someday I will catch up and grab the bull by its horns.

My All-Time Favorite Advocacy is World Peace!!

Maybe some day...
